The disease is caused by the loss of dopamine producing neurons in the brain. Current treatments, like levodopa, help to manage symptoms by enhancing dopamine levels but do not slow disease progression.
While in 1990, around 2.6 mn people were affected, and 6 mn in 2015, this number is projected to grow to more than 17 mn by 2040. The expected growth is mainly driven by ageing, as Parkinson’s disease affects around 1% of the population above 60 years old.
Therapies in development are now targeting the underlying biology of the disease. These include innovative treatments that have the potential to slow the progression of the condition.
